Sunday, October 12, 2008 New review! New life! Raw, bitter-sweet power (Rotherham Advertiser, Fri 10th Oct. Phil Turner.) Johnny Cash never played Rotherham but a little bit of his spirit lives on in the shape of Karen Mulcahey. The legendary Cash broke down barriers to get hardened nmates rocking insde Fulsom Prison 40 Years ago. Singer/Songwriter Mulcahey, somewhat appropriately slugging brandy from a vacuum flask to keep a cold at bay, was a ray of sunshine on a cold and wet Saturday night inside the Speigel tent at Rotherham Open Arts festival. After a lively version of Cash's Fulsom Prison Blues, her own 'The Devil's Charms' , a tribute to Cash who died 5 years ago, captured the honesty which was the great man's trademark. Big-hearted Mulcahey, once described as an angel who just downed a bottle of whisky, has a raw, bitter -sweet power, not unlike Janis Joplin. Her band - lead guitar Mark Khaladj Oates, bass Gary Solomon and drummer sameer butt- are a tight line up that gives her the scope she needs, from rasping folk- rock to sweet acoustic sounds. From blues to folk to country, her vocals and self-penned songs are subtle, poignant, intelligent and , like Cash, totally genuine. The likes of 'The Absence of Friends' , 'There aint no water here' and 'Continuous Orbit' grab you by the vitals and don't let go. She is angry, passionate and political and 'Choked', about the Iraq war, still resonates frm the voices of the two million marches who inspired it. Mulcahey demolishes all the female singer stereotypes and fully deserved the standing ovation. Like Cash, she walks the line.
Sat 7th June 2.20pm - 3pm 'Pride' festival, Cemetary Park, Montague Road, Sheffield.(Free) Sat 4th October: The Spiegel tent, All saints Square Rotherham. Between 4pm - 7pm (Free) New EP / 3rd album on the way! Back to the raw!
