| REVIEWS Karen Mulcahey: Find Your Way Find Your Way is the arresting debut from Rotherham artist Karen Mulcahey. She smashes into smithereens the clichéd myth of the female singer-songwriter as floaty, whimsical and romantically introspective. Her powerful voice - accompanied by guitarist Luke Pepper- resonates with passion, anger and defiance. Styles vary across the ten-track recording, from blues, to folk, to country, to rock. The subtle, intelligent lyrics cover a range of subjects, including journeys, disappointment in love and life, personal and political struggle. Ultimately though, the mood is uplifting. Find your way, sings Mulcahey hopefully at the end of the record, holding out a hand to all of us who know what it means to be lost. - Elly Tams, Sandman magazine Karen Mulcahey: Find Your Way "...Karen booms it out live and on CD with that explosive voice of hers. This is a powerful beginning and I can imagine Radio Luminaries such as Bob Harris doing much to help her along the way." - Martin Hudson, Classic Rock Society Karen Mulcahey: Find Your Way "A few months ago, this CD came out in England and it seemed interesting for Rootstime to devote some attention to the debut of this singer-songwriter Karen Mulcahey, which is definitely justified because this is just beautiful; a CD to appeal to a wide audience. Find Your Way is a cd that lives up to its name. Karen Mulcahey gets her influences from everywhere but can integrate these cleverly into well-constructed songs. Find Your Way deserves time: Folk-Blues-Rock, all forged together into excellent songs that are portrayed beautifully by her guitarist Luke Pepper, who has produced this album very well on a shoe-string budget. But this is all about Karen Mulcahey. When we hear her sing, we know what's been missing in the last year - there are plenty of female singer-songwriters, but few with the warmth and talent of this one. Find Your Way is exciting and unique." - Freddy Celis, Rootstime Karen Mulcahey: Six-track EP "My first thoughts on hearing Karen Mulcahey were how much she reminded me of Thea Gilmore, and singer/songwriter that has gone on to much success. This is none more obvious than on 'Choked,' a song that I feel she would have been better opening the demo with. She extends herself through folky, rocky songs in to bluesy numbers where the lyric is food for her music, whilst some crisp acoustic guitar work aids and abets the feeling that here is a lady with a future in music. Raw and beautiful all in one, words essential in the arena of the singer/songwriter." - McCullough Crane, Classic Rock Society Wednesday, May 12th, 2004 Rotherham Arts Centre, Walker Place, Rotherham "Karen Mulcahey smells more like success than anything else." - The Rotherham Advertiser Wednesday, February 11th, 2004 Rotherham Arts Centre, Walker Place, Rotherham "Karen Mulcahey is a force to be reckoned with. With the "cool and capable" Luke Pepper, her set of original songs burst in to the evening injecting a raw energy usually reserved for punk. She sang with a unique powerhouse of voice that seemed to swing from the raucous to the touchingly pure. She shook the foundations of this council building!" - Georgina Kersey, Rotherham Council |
